Microsoft SP2 Interview on Winsupersite

Since I could be killed by coyotes if I go outside for a smokie treat, I've been killing some rods and cones by reading through an interesting interview that was posted around the web the other day with some of the leads behind Microsoft's Service Pack 2. (note to brain - do check and see if watching tv with the lights off is really bad for your eyes)

The coyotes are wigging me the hell out

I'm tacking this out at 4:10am on Thursday, so if I actually post it, it'll mean I haven't been eaten by the fucking coyotes circling the cabin.

Rumble young man, rumble

Via the comments and email, some have taken me to task for poking fun at Canada. They had some valid points, and really Canadians and Mac users share a sense of kindred-ship that might not be apparent upon first glance. This is what I've dubbed the 'Canadian Parallel', and goes like so...

You've got to give to get

I really need to start a link list at some point, as there are lots of great things out there on the web. Sometimes someone won't take the time to read something unless they've seen it at more than once place, then they get curious about what the fuss is about.

Unfortunately I never get around to doing what I say I'm going to on the blog. However, if I did have a link list, I'd be linking to Aseigo's 'How to Kill Open Source on the Desktop?'. Not because I really agree with where he takes it, but because I like the questions he's asking.

The Adobe Version Cue Exploit

In a somewhat amusing turn of events, the day after I posted Yin & Yang a local remote root exploit centered around Adobe's Version Cue software hit the web. Judging by my email, this has been confusing to some, and hasn't really been passed around the Mac web very much.

I'm not sure why, it's fairly serious. If you have installed the Adobe Creative Suite, you're at risk. Or maybe it has been talked about all over and I just don't hang out in those places...

The High-PPI Problem (Redux (AKA, notes on CoreImage))

Back in "The-High PPI Problem" I went into what resolution independance was, why it was important, and what was needed to get it that we don't have.

The biggest thing I went on about was accelerated drawing, namely that it didn't look we'd get it for 10.4, and so it didn't look like we'd be anywhere close to resolution independence for quite awhile. I've been meaning to revisit that...

Apple gets around to disabling Harmony on the iPod

My inbox is somewhat abuzz about Apple quietly releasing a firmware update for the iPod that disables Real's Harmony technology. After I get through my email bin, I almost don't have to check my feeds. When it's 1am and I haven't even touched them, having the news come to you is kinda cool.

Anthropomorphizing alcohol while pondering backups and hoping I don't have to give a friend bad news

oreilly rss

I've been working hard on some projects, and deadlines and milestones can really take it out of your sleep schedule. I'm kind of known for pushing my sleep schedule beyond normal limits, sometimes through artificial means, and used to be quite proud of it.

El bloguero cervecero (Part 1 of 2)

English-speaking users have gotten more than their fair shake of the internet as a whole, and frankly I love it. I was born somewhere else, and the few years of a foreign language I was forced to take in school have rapidly dissipated from my brain as every year goes on.

Part of me is wishing I'd paid more attention to those classes, but the other part is grateful Americans are allowed the luxury of just not paying that great of attention to other countries unless we're heading there as tourist.

Yin & Yang Redux (AKA, "You sank my battleship")

So, that was fun. After going through all the feedback from the last post, I figured I'd take time out from my normal saturday morning googling for a new hangover cure and try to answer a good chunk of it. As usual, where applicable questions of a similar vein are paraphrased and aggregated.

Yin & Yang

Some users get a bit of sick joy when it comes to bashing Microsoft on security, but like most spewing demagoguery they're generally leaving out the context, and no matter what the subject, context is important. Without context, it's very difficult to learn.

I encountered a user like this the other day, gleefully gloating over a user who found they'd been infected with some spyware like a monkey throwing its poo at the zoo. This really left a bad taste in my mouth, and since it's been awhile since I've had a long, half-baked stream of consciousness on the blog, here we go.
