Adding Bookmarks to the audio version of Evening at Adler
Just change the extension on the file you're offering to .m4b to enable itunes to remember your place, as well as put it in the Audiobooks menu.I was 45 minutes in when I disconnected my ipod to go to lunch, and I ended up with a sore thumb seeking back to my place :)
Awesome awesome discussion. Real meat for any cocoa developer.

Sincerely glad you enjoyed it, but the extension isn't going to change, for several reasons...
- You didn't say please, or proffer it as a suggestion, rather you just told me to do it, which is annoying on a vacation day. FYI, I get over being annoyed within a few minutes of finding coffee, so don't worry about it.
- Changing the archives at this point would be insanity, even if I was inclined towards .m4b.
- I'm not inclined towards .m4b. The .m4a extension is known quantity, and lots of things on platforms that may not have iTunes don't have a problem with it. Even on OS X, you can't open .m4b within VLC by dragging it to the Dock. Not everyone uses iTunes or an iPod, etc. and I'd hate to act as though they do.
- If someone is listening via iTunes, they can save their stopping point without changing the selection via the "Remember playback position" under the options preference.
- This is the kind of thing a user who knows what he's doing can change in two seconds to better suit his needs without it crimping the style of others.
That said, I have nothing against .m4b, which is why I'm posting it. It is a long archive, and some users may be served knowing they can save the change the file's extension to get that within iTunes.

You don't even have to change the extension in iTunes 6. Just get info on the file, and add a checkmark by "bookmarkable" or whatever it's called in English.

You can force any application to open any file by cmd-opt-dragging it to the Dock.

.. I thought now that this thing was finally posted up the incessant postings on the "Evening at Adler" would cease. I subscribed to this blog because I liked some of the content I've seen here before but ever since then (two months ago) it seems like 80% of all posts have about this damn thing or the t-shirts and I'm kind of tired of it. I'm paying good nothing for these writings and I demand more for my dollar!
Seriously, though, I can kind of tolerate it, and I can understand the reason for this post like many of the Adler posts, but it just feels to me that this has become a blog-about-a-blog a bit like Daring Fireball in recent months (although far less posts are made there than here, the ratio of interesting content to inane blog stuff is similar.)

Maybe with the myopic filter of only looking at the last couple months, since DrunkCon'05 is such a major event in the Drunken Universe... but if you peruse the archives instead and look at the entire history of the blog I think you'll find that ratio is way way different.

OK, I also e-mailed this directly to drunkenbatman, but I guess I'll also post it here. There's really no need to change the extension to ".m4b".
If you want the file to be bookmarkable, get info on it in iTunes, click the "Options" tab, and then check the "Remember playback position" checkbox. If you want it to show up in the Audibooks section, just change it's genre ID3 tag to "Audiobook". There's no reason to bother drunkenbatman and make him actually do something, especially if it's completely superfluous. :)

*I will not...
you get the idea. Yes the first responder was right, I was actually surprised by how simple the process was (totally missing the inspector in iTunes) and just felt the need to share the love. I smacked myself on the forehead after sending it for thinking the original file, mirrored and torrented 20 times over, could actually be changed.

I must agree. Even though DB lets you pay for this, you don't have to. And he's not making you view it.

Just watched the video. All I can say is wow. Thanks.
As someone who just started doing OS X work and is thinking about moving from contracting to perhaps application writing, this was tremendously useful.
To the guy who thought it was "inane blog stuff," watch the video. If you can't find something in it that is worth your time, why are you reading this blog at all?
DB, thanks again.

I think "just change the extension..." had to be taken as a general tip for anyone and nobody in particular, not as an order that you had to obey :-)
