Flying MarsEdit
Over at Inessential, Brent of Ranchero noted last night that they're going to be contracting out to Gus for the development of MarsEdit for the next version:
We thought about different people, but one name kept coming up as totally ideal: Gus Mueller of Flying Meat.(Now, before anyone worries that Gus has given up his indie status, he hasn’t: he’s working on MarsEdit as a contractor. He’s still Gus of Flying Meat.)
(And, by the way, Gus does live near me. We just had a meeting at my office, in fact, and now he has the source code and is getting started.)
Brent mentioned at Evening at Adler that development would continue, but wouldn't say who or what company might be taking over development, but just the fact that it wasn't dead alleviated some minds (cough -- I use it) but there's always the worry you're going to end up with something weird.
If you're a MarsEdit user and spend a few minutes with Gus's VoodooPad or his other works, you'll probably notice it'd be difficult to think of another independent dev better suited to taking over dev of MarsEdit from a look and feel POV -- there's an obvious alignment there between Brent and Gus's sensibilities. If I'd have had a say, he's who I'd have wanted but probably wouldn't have followed up with because I'd have assumed he wasn't a realistic option.
Of course sensibilities and actually getting up to speed to make headway on the next release are two different things, but Gus also mentioned last night that he's used to working with other people's code (should have followed up, but I needed to get back on the video) and was finding and fixing some reported issues within a few hours of getting the code. Cool, and good thing I didn't have a say.

Gus is a great guy, and I'm happy to see him doing Mars Edit. Very cool stuff indeed.

I love MarsEdit and used it on my powerbook, but now that I seem to be switching to Windows until the Intel macs come out, is there a MarsEdit type app on the evil side that I can use in the meantime?

One word. fuckingawesome!
Jay Contonio: it's slow sometimes (I have no idea why, it pages to disk like mad!), but try Ecto: http://ecto.kung-foo.tv/ (which has an osx client too)

It would have been nice to at least publish a raw audio recording of the Eagle event right after it went down. It looks like the video will be too much (sic!) too late. You don't have to hit us with a blockbuster movie, you know.

Gus is a great guy..but those 1 man companies are just a bit lame. on one hand they are very creative but at the same time upgrades are always late, not in sync with new OSx updates, conflicts with other shareware and basically very unpredictable.

Knowing Michael (db) for years, I wish I could log in and delete some comments before he sees them. I don't understand. I couldn't go to the talk but the files will be up when it is up and reasonable people understand that right?
He is not holding onto it or editing he only has so much time to open up the movie and synchronize the audio between the cameras. You should IM him and ask what is going on his life or what it took to get him to get back to town for that evening AT ALL or when the last time he had a vacation was.

Don't feed the trolls, or I'll just delete all of you, as I don't have the time for it and that's quickest.

I understand you are busy, but could you give an ETA because I really want to see this? I am tired of loading the homepage every day checking and not seeing it. :(

when i talked to db yesterday, he was inundated with maui x-stream zentu license violations... he was also really grumpy :) and he has a vacation coming up

geez I just don't get some people... they mix impatience with impoliteness and still manage to argue about their case. Holy hell if all you can do is sit in front of your screen and hit refresh every ten seconds to see if DB has posted the stuff, then use your hands to do something else, (whatever that might be).
I living on the other side of the Pacific, I could not attend the talk, I want to watch the video but I do not see what difference it makes if I have to wait 10 or 20 days more, as long as I have the chance to watch the thing ! and I am not whining like some spoiled kid wanting some new toy...

Dude, use the RSS-feed like the rest of us. You'll get notified when there is anything new on the page and won't have to recheck the page serveral times a day.
For a list of cool RSS-readers for Mac, see for example DBs own RSS for Mac OS X Roundtable.

Well after checking our Ecto, I think Gus should make a Windows version of MarsEdit as well...and Gus if you want someone else to do a Windows version, holla.

"Save yourself the trouble and just hit us with an audio recording."
I'm truly sorry for offending some people. All I was trying to say was that some of us are actually interested in what was said on that particular evening. To that end a simple audio recording would suffice.
Now it seems to me that db tries to share the vibe of the event with us by cutting an elaborate video. That's a lot of work and I know what I'm talking about. In that regard I'm guilty of not being sensitive in my last post and obviously have a big problem with not having been there.
So again, db and others, please accept my apologies.

Chill, none of it is a big deal -- and you're certainly not the only one hounding me, but its not as though the info will go stale -- I'll admit I don't get that part.
lol it's just more complex than that -- it's certainly not an elaborate video, it's just that in order to have the video at all some elaborate things had to be taken into account.
I.E., it's two cameras, which are staggered (not synched) because that would have required us to stop the talk while we switched tapes. So all six tapes had to be imported, and then synched, and then scrubbed for glitches -- and then edited down so that the scene is focused on who is talking as best as possible. There's more to it than even that, but no point going into it right now.
The good news? It's done, and just has to be rendered out. I'll look at it tonight, I think I just have to export out the audio to a mono mix, then render the video and then mux them.

Check it Ecto, it freaking rocks.

I use both extensively and here at seminary and couldn't be happier that: 1) MarsEdit hasn't been thrown under the bus, and 2) Gus is the guy who is now owning its further development. I think VP is my favorite piece of software now; it has made Old Testament and Hermeneutics much more than bearable. My notes kick ass.
