Adler Aftermath

So, last night was really cool. It wasn't a lot of things, and it certainly wasn't perfect, but it was a lot of things, and from what I can tell everyone had a lot of fun and everyone was glad they came. At some point I should probably deconstruct Evening at Adler because we learned a lot, but I'm already working on the video which I think you'll really dig.
However, there is something I want to note: Those who were there brought an awesome vibe, from the audience to the participants to (especially) the volunteers. There were a hell of a lot of potential points of failure that were lurking about, some of which we hit (I didn't know the kitchen closed at 11pm -- that almost got ugly), but the vibe kept it all (reasonably) glued together while we made it up as we went along.
Words can't express.
The above might seem pedantic and obligatory, but anyone close to it was aware we were riding a very weird wave right towards the big rocks, and I'm sure those in the audience picked up on some of the stuff going on. You guys ruled, and really made it happen -- thanks for everything.

Please don't forget an audio-only version, I'm really looking forward to this.

Hey, db. Can you confirm Clint Ecker's claim over at Infinite Loop regarding how hard Wil Shipley's ass is?

When's your (National Lampoons-style) European Tour?

Something to improve next time is making yourself available during the after party itself. I saw you once and tried to make it over to shake your hand, but never got close before I had to leave. I thought you had left your own party until you showed up for a few minutes at the end. I waited until the demo I was watching was over but when I turned around you were gone again. Perhaps tables for each of the panelists so we can be sure to at least shake your hand?

I gotta say DB. I'm really happy you did this, and I'm really sad I couldn't be there. However, keep it up. Things like this will help keep the mac development community exciting. I'm really looking forward to seeing some video, and I'm really looking forward to having you do it again, this time with myself in the audience (and hopefully someday in the panel itself :))

Thanks for making it happen. It was a great first "mac event" for me. I had an awesome time.

Well from what Shipley mentioned on his blog (stupid midterms made me miss the event...) drunkenbatman was busy with the girls and smokes outside. Which I think is reasonable. They're girls. And smokes. Both addictive.
Oh, also shoes are involved.

Anyways very cool that you put this together, hope you do it again next year (with any luck when I can freely escape from school for a bit) and... I secretly hate everyone who attended :)

I don't know if this has come up before, but to save on bandwidth and provide better video, why not distribute a large file via Bittorrent and a smaller file (normal stream) via an assortment of mirrors?
Also: normally, coverage happens the day after an event... now, coverage happens the night of the day after. Drunken indeed. :)

Yep, had a good time DB. I wanted to stay out more but was afraid if I did, I might fall asleep in the middle of conversation; I'd been running on VERY little sleep.
Still, 'twas interesting, a good time was (I think) had by all and I'd definitely come again assuming monetary situations were good.

Congrats, db... think you're up for another one next year?
Careful with that question. I asked him after the event and you would have thought I killed his cat. :-P

DB, thanks for a great time.
I hope you were able to enjoy it as much as us in the audience. It was truly a unique and fascinating event. I mean, how often do I get to drink with you and Simmons, and watch Shipley hit on the waitress? Good times.
Thanks, and feel free to do these frequently.

yeah db...nice shindig...thanks to the adler folks and the volunteers for making it a mostly smooth experience. Of course, also thanks to the developers for making the time and supplying the candor.

It was actually one of the best real-live blogging type events I've been to--and it was a great round table. Thank you for putting it together and thanks to everyone who participated for making it a really great event.

What codec are you going to use for the video?
I hope it is high resolution and H.264. :)

DB, I had an awesome time. Have you thought about doing an open source version of this? There seemed to be a "small indie macdev" theme this time around.

Yeah, was a lot of fun. FYI the kids from Purdue rolled back in around 6 :) Thanks for keeping my rides home from being arrested :) Staying awake that 23rd hour after an evening like that was growing difficult! To any of the speakers who've made it this far on the comments, some of you i got to meet and shake hands with, some of you i didn't, but all of you did awesome and i know we all appreciate you guys donating time like that. if nothing else write off any of the expenses as advertising and try to get a tax write-off for it :)

DB & The Panel:
Truly amazing that you could get the group of people together that you did! Thanks for the effort. Hope it can be done again. I suspect you will find more of us out here willing to assist as well.
Keep up the great work.

Very great times all around! Coming from Austin, TX alone, I wasn't sure I'd have that much fun, but I ran into many people I knew from ADHOC/MacHack. I also met a lot of great people, including db himself.
Hope to have an event like this again! Count me in if it happens again :)

I had a kick-ass time. Unfortunately I had to leave the after-party early to catch the last Metra out of Chicago, but I met some awesome people there. Sure I blew through a wad of cash in no time, but it was worth it.
Same time next year then? :)

Thanks DB, and to all the panelists and the audience for a great talk, and a great after-party. I was running on very little sleep, but the bar-hopping and whatnot afterward was really entertaining, and I'm glad I got a chance to enjoy that time with some of you.
The non-incriminating pictures will be up shortly in full-rez on flickr. There are some movies as well, but those may be too incriminating to post as then you can actually hear the fact that many of us must have had sailors in our ancestry.
Oh, and Wil Shipley's ass? No competition.
Posted by: foresmac at October 24, 2005 12:27 PM
I can personally verify Wil Shipley's ass is indeed as hard as he says it is. So there is certainly a small amount of physical proof for some of his bravado. Also, he likes Maker's Mark.
I will have a gallery of uncomfortably close-up portraits of the panelists soon, depending on school work and PTA obligations. db, I'll be getting a copy of those pictures to you somehow (soon!).
Also, db does in fact like the ladies--apparently mine included ;)

It was an awesome night, DB! Thanks for all your hard work, from the whole Meetro team.
Cheers to suggestions about the next one. :-)
