Gotta launder my karma
Sometimes, there are enough things going on that are outside your control that you end up latching onto the weirdest things in order to let your brain say "Ok, you didn't get xyz done, but you did get p done, so you can sleep." Tonight I went medieval on my inbox. To that end, I'm pleased to announce my inbox is officially under 100 unreads, and I plan to keep it that way, with my next goal set for 50.
Of course, I haven't pressed the receive button in several hours, my dock is still full of correspondence I must get through before I find my pillow, and MarsEdit has 20 more draft posts, but I'll take it. I meant to have a small flurry of posts about various things up by this evening, but it hasn't happened. There are two things going on here:
- It's all there in my head, there is just so much going on that by the time I open MarsEdit I've talked about it so many times that day that I draw a blank. That's weird, and probably doesn't make a lot of sense, but here we are anyways.
- I'm chewing through the list like a madman, but some things are taking longer than others... and almost all of it has to have a higher priority over stuff going onto the site right now. It doesn't help that I apparently criminally underestimate how long things will take me, but sometimes you have to give to get, and we're now only 5 days away.
The good news is there is light at the end of the tunnel now, so there'll be fewer things where we're showing up and going "Um, well alright how do we..." Some things I'm just leaving to work out as it may, because while this talk is turning into a big deal, it needs to not be a big deal to keep the vibe I originally wanted it to.
That probably doesn't make sense either, but here we are anyways. However, before I set on the dock full of emails, I want to let you know what's going on with the shirts.
Just to get it out of the way, it's looking like you won't have them in your hands in time for the talk. I never promised they would be, but I really wanted them to be. Unfortunately it was a pretty large order with a complex design and the lead time has been longer than hoped, but the guys printing them are doing their best.
There's a big box of them hopefully getting in Tuesday, but even under ideal conditions that means even those whose orders are in that box would have them showing up at their doorstep around the day of the talk. We were going to be cutting it close, and we did try.
Worst case, we're expecting the full order to be in by the 26th, but stock should be rolling in box by box before then to be sent off. I really appreciate your patience, and if you pre-ordered, you'll get them first. We did order a bunch of extras, and when we get the initial stock here in the next few days we'll snap some shots of the final and put it back up for order. That out of the way...
I mentioned I was thinking of throwing something extra in the orders, and that's a go. The image you see to the right is the artwork for the vinyl decals that'll be included -- one per shirt ordered.
It's a hefty 4.25" by 5.75", weatherproof, and I have no clue what you'll do with them, but that's not the point.
The point is for them to be a little something extra, to hopefully make you laugh, and be a tiny token of my gratitude for every one you bought as its all going somewhere. Tapes for the multiple cameras during the talk and after. Minimums and such for the after-talk. All sorts of things that have cropped up while trying to keep this as free as possible. I.E., we're looking at a combined total of around 10 hours of video (3 hour talk, plus two cameras), possibly a little more, for the talk which is the excuse for the after-talk, plus parts of the after-talk itself.
If I can get Rentz and Shipley drunk enough to hug, I want it documented or no one would believe me. If one of them gets annoyed and slugs me, I'm assuming you'd want to see that too. Consider you need about 13 gigabytes of storage per hour of video just to get it onto a hard drive, and then you actually have to work with it and edit it and save out your projects. Sure, doing it with 512 of RAM isn't ideal but its doable, just slow -- however you have to have the storage. This is just to give you an idea, but basically its not going towards a new iPod.
To break it down simply: Thanks, and moo.

You need a secretary.

Those stickers are sweet! Any way to buy just a sticker? (Not that you need anything else your plate)

I also vote for letting us pick up the stickers separate from the shirts. I also vote for you giving the composer and title of the lyrics for the songs you use in your post. I google them all now that I caught on: Battleflag, by the Lo-Fidelity Allstars.
iTMS is broken right now for me but you could link it up and make extra cash. Every bit helps, right?

I'm sorry I didn't order a shirt, DB. Feel free to beat my bank (Chevy Chase Bank) mercilessly for being retarded about cashing my payroll check ("Your account has been closed." "My account has been WHAT?").

Redundancy...*ahem*
Arg. The good news: When interrupted, I don't lose my train of thought when I switch back. The bad news: I apparently have some built-in delay.

"....is time to get down, on your motherf*cking knees?"
Must spin that up.
Thanks for the reminder DBM.....

I save you one email which I've been meaning to send you (since you get so much email, and it's not very important):
Apple's shoddy naming dept. strikes again!

Good Lord, what an insanely obscure song you're quoting! I didn't think another soul in existence ever heard "Battle Flag" by the Low Fidelity All-Stars. Then again, I don't get out much. I heard it on the radio exactly once and by pure chance found the CD a month later. The rest of the album is terrible though.

Googling the headers? You cheater. :P Obscure? I loved that song when it first came out, and still play it often. The whole thing's infectious as hell.
Wondering when DB will snap up some lines from the Propellerheads...

PS...
Every time you get into these rants about getting too many emails to reply in a timely manner, my mind's eye is referred immediately to Bruce Almighty, watching Jim Carrey use email to sort out God's prayers.

I only cheat when there's money involved. :)
From my experience, nobody from where I came from ever heard of this song. This happened with DJ Shadow too, but then I met people who liked his music in college. Like I said, I live a sheltered life.

No googling the headers for me - That's a much loved song of mine. There are a few versions - If you like Rage against the machine it's worth digging out the one with Tom Morello on it.
Swami is right though - The rest of the album is pants. Actually their other stuff isn't much cop either. Generally (IMHO) they sound better when someone remixes them (Fatboy Slim etc.)

Ah, so that's where you got the "my XX loyal fans [..]" from.. :-)
Yeah, the song is ok - a bit geeky lyrics byt hey - it's good music.

what's that about Adium? something you haven't submitted yet?
