Official date for the talk

Earlier today I found out the venue choice -- the Universe Theater at Adler Planetarium -- went from a 95% lock to a 100% lock. This means I can tell you the official date for the talk will be the evening of October 21st.
Done. Locked-in. Won't have the plug pulled. Same week as before, except now it's a Friday and will be slightly later in the evening.
Consider this an informal ping for those who have to make travel arrangements, as it's going to be several days until I can formally release exactly who'll be participating in the low-key roundtable, along with a spiffy poster and other details. It's going to be a cool Friday.

Any chance of the show happening in Australia? International flights are prohibitively expensive for a student. Then again, I could just graft wings on a donkey and fly over myself! That is, fly to the US, not over myself... as in my body... >
Anyway I'm sure it will be a lovely talk. Just remember to maintain eye contact with your audience, and project your voice, and to alwyas let your conscience be your guide!
Do I appear sane enough to post to a guy called drunkenbatman yet? Mommy? Mommy, no! Don't hit me! Mommy!

Last time I checked, Friday is cool by definition. Although I suppose this Friday will rewrite the book.

Try hotels.com. We stayed in the downtown Hilton for $60 through them last year when we visited Chicago. Great city.

Address for event? I went to the website and lazily wandered away when it was not blatantly obvious... Found some great flight/hotel combos ;) but want to make sure my hotel is somewhat close.

Dude, there really is no address or really an apparent one as the location is on the lakefront in the Museum Campus of Chicago. Accessible by trains, buses and cabs from really anywhere. Nice place, sorry it wasn't the store on the Mag Mile but this is still a cool venue.

So... is this going to be a first-come, first-serve thing?

It also helps to picture the crowd naked to calm yourself down. :D
And here's the address of the place if anyone is looking for it:
Universe Theater
1300 S. Lake Shore Drive
Chicago, IL

I'll have directions and the whole deal up pretty soon, but basically it's right on the water, right in southern downtown, next to all the rest of the museums. If your hotel is anywhere downtown, you'll be set. Someone mentioned the Hilton, which is a little North and across the river (a bunch of the hotels are there), which would mean a 5 to 7 minute cab ride tops.

I'll second the call for the talk to occur in Australia. This blatant US-centrism has gone too far; I mean come on - both of us would need to fly halfway around the world just to attend. It would be much simpler for all involved if the show came here instead.

Oh sure, wait until I move to DC from Chicago to host your talk. Now I won't attend, so there!
For those from out of town, you can get a hotel in the northern 'burbs for way cheap, take the train downtown and just walk east down Madison or Monroe towards the lakefront, and north on Michigan Ave. Make sure to stop at a Caribou along the way to gain the energy you need. :)

Am I the only one who thinks the new venue looks like some abandoned Soviet nuclear research facility from the 1950s? That abstract statue would so easily convert into a giant hammer and sickle, too....
Anyway, have fun, wish I could be there, etc.

For those of you looking for good deep dish, be sure to check out Gino's. Great stuff. In my book, beats Uno hands down. Also, bring a pocket knife to carve your name in the place (I think you can only do this in one location, though)

it appears that some of the PUMUG crew will be making the roadie up to the 312, so prepare yourself now.

The Purdue Macintosh User's Group's Social SIG is planning a trip from West Lafayette to Chicago. If anyone in the west-central Indiana area wants to coordinate car-pooling or sharing overnight accommodations, feel free to start a thread on the forum.
PUMUG reprazent!

Yes, yes it does. In fact, the picture itself looks rendered with people placed on the steps.

Cheap Lodging -- If you're looking for budget lodging that's clean, safe, and downtown, check out the Chicago Hostel -- in a recently renovated building, very clean, no need to be a member, from $34 night for a shared room. http://www.hichicago.org/

Hey guys,
I'm lucky enough to live in Chicago (Lakeview - between Wrigleyville and Lincoln Park). If anyone has any questions, drop me a line and I'll try and help you out (food, lodging, etc.). We should set a flash mob up beforehand!
Ap

I have family in Ohio, so I'll try to make it from Virginia but the distance may make flying more economical. Anyone recommend a good budget hotel in downtown Chicago that won't break a budget?
