Of New Orleans
Earlier today, I wrote several thousand words about New Orleans before I realized I still didn't have the words and was just doing it to try to structure my thoughts. I don't think anyone has the words yet. Such a mess.
However, if you have $5 you can spare on your credit card, the McCormick Tribune Foundation will turn it into $7.50 until they reach a million ($0.50 for every $1), and will cover the administrative costs themselves so the full amount gets where it needs to go.

actually 5 dollars will be 7.50, or so I remember hearing on wbbm this afternoon
Thanks, I must have gotten my wires crossed. I only donated $25, but it was very quick and easy there, and I know some are leery about the Red Cross now.

Regarding the McCormick Tribune Foundation's donation site to which you linked above, please note that the VeriSign certificate for the first page (where you're to enter your name and address) is current, but the security certificate for the second page, where you're to enter your credit card info, expired 17-APR-04.

I had friends from NOLA over for dinner the other night. They have no idea if their house is standing or not. And if it's standing, if it's been looted.
We've offered the spare room in the house for refugees. My daughter is dooing fundraising with her church.
Do whatever you can. It's good karma.

I was due out there on placement at Tulane Uni Hospital. No more. Donations are the best I can do now, but I can try to do that well.

I am about 3 hours north of the gulf coast and things are looking pretty bad. I may head down there in about a week to help out a friend's family that lives in Gulfport, MS.
We were hit too, but at a Category 1 level. We have downed trees and powerlines, but otherwise most everything in this area is OK. The only worry we have right now is Gas. There has been a panic in the area and you cannot get any Gas due to 85%+ of the stations being out. When you do find one, plan on waiting for about 1.5-2 hours, and then they are limiting it to only 10 gallons a person. Also, a very large percentage of people even in my area are still out of power. I just had mine restored last night having been out since Monday morning. This is a worry due to the heat that is setting back in now that Katrina is gone.
Any help for the people further south than I am is a need. The New Orleans area, Gulfport, Boloxi, you name it. For a good look at what the damage is, go to http://www.wlbt.com and look at the skycopter on the coast videos. That will give you plenty to go by.
