drunkenbatman does MacTech magazine

If you're a subscriber to MacTech Magazine, you may be surprised when you open this issue and are greeted with The Cow and white russian. Awhile ago, Dean Shavit over at MacTech approached me about some stuff, and it eventually led to him asking if I'd sit with him and talk about open source.

Being able to see The Cow in an actual printed -- let alone respectable -- magazine was one hell of an enticement, so after some ground rules -- and liberal use of the word 'slumming' -- we were good to go. We ended up sitting down late last month, and I'm told the magazine is in the process of being printed right now. Since it took place 'live', the interview has a different feel from the other I did with Jesper, and it's all about the Mac and OSS.

Still, the tone is still the same, even if most of the swearing and my rambling about condoms and utility belts had to be removed. It was amusing when, after the interview, Dean hit me up:

"The transcript of the interview is over 16,000 words."

"Oh? How much space were you given for it?"

"6,000. I'm going to have to do a lot of editing."

"Yeah."

While I haven't seen it laid out yet, I'm told that Dean was somehow able to get MacTech to almost double his space . 10,000 words, with two shots of The Cow and one of the white russian. And yes, I'm being entirely serious. The only problem for some of you web folks is actually seeing it, as MacTech doesn't have much of a web presence to speak of.

I'm aware of these ways:

  • Obviously, if you subscribe to MacTech, you're good to go. I'm told they have a subscriber base between 25,000 to 30,000, so that's probably quite a few of you.

  • Its cover price is $8.95, and you can pick up a copy of it if they sell it somewhere around you. I tried to get more details on where its actually sold in stores, but from what I can tell if you are in a major metropolitan area and have a Barnes and Nobles around your odds of finding it go way up.

  • They have a 'risk free' trial you can click on towards the bottom of their website which gets you 60% off the newsstand price. I was promised that if you subscribe, you are sure to get a copy of the issue with the interview in it. If you do it in the future, I'm told you'll want to go through the hassle of emailing the editor -- David Sobsey -- to get it. [spam protected, remove part of it]

  • It may be available online in some form at some point, but not for quite awhile.

I'm told I have some issues coming my way, but all my copies will be sealed and archived in a vault, or I'd do a raffle or something. :)

And yes, I know what you're thinking: "Your site was on TV, and a newspaper, and now a magazine. Have you peaked?" Possibly, but I still think a drinking smoking Cow -- that isn't a Cow -- ranting about technology and sex would make one hell of a cartoon series.
