Napster wants to offer movie downloads

Key word is, wants. Silicon.com has the article:

Speaking at the Midem music conference, Napster CEO Chris Gorog said the company was considering offering movies alongside its current catalogue of some one million music tracks.

"We are currently considering moving into video, particularly to tap the younger video-game generation," he told delegates, according to the Financial Times. "I do think that while there are huge players in the delivery of movies like Sky, there could be a role for Napster."

This is kind of a non-story. My views on this are pretty much known, but basically everyone is thinking about doing this. Unfortunately it's just one of those things where the devil is in the details, and whoever is successful has to corral the various content, distribution, and middlemen into some semblance of something that'll work.

I'd be very surprised if Napster was able to do it at this point, but they have made inroads on the college campuses. Still, it kind of smacks of the CEO phishing for buzz and mindshare. Basically, nothing to see here. Move along.
